Every journey has its cycles and new beginnings, at work and in life.
I have a personal website that I created around five years ago, before my first job as a software engineer. The goal of the website at that time was to show my portfolio of projects created during my studying period and my current skills, to eventually land my first job. I remember it was really fun back then to create that website, it’s still online, actually . I also remember researching a lot of references and changing the colors and fonts all the time, until I asked my designer friend for help and in 10 minutes she gave me the color palette and fonts I should use. That made me notice how much time I wasted changing colors because of my lack of knowledge in layout, design and these types of things. That website was made with Next.js, I also added Framer Motion for some animations . At that time I had no idea what my first job was going to be, and my knowledge stack was Ruby on Rails and React. My first job, and only job until now, though, was as a Ruby on Rails developer, and I ended up going mostly all the way as a backend developer, also switching to Golang in my job, which is what I work on most nowadays.
That being said, after my first job, I basically never looked at my personal website anymore, I never added any new project or made any modification. I think its only purpose was to get a job, not express myself. That’s where this new website enters.
Today marks 4 years and 4 months since I started my career officially as a software engineer. In all this time many things have changed since that website: I went from junior to senior, I left a shared house to live alone (still paying rent though), I ran my first marathon, I took my first two international trips and learned a whole lot, not only about software engineering but about many aspects of life.
I know I should have done this since the beginning. Imagine how many posts or texts I would have written by now, all this journey documented since the beginning. It didn’t happen. Maybe for lack of confidence, maybe because my focus was becoming a better engineer since the beginning instead of personal projects, maybe because of fear. It doesn’t matter. Today I believe I can do it all, maybe for being more confident, maybe because it’s easier to create personal projects (AI…). It doesn’t matter. I didn’t document any of my journey up to now, but every journey has its cycles, at work and in life.
This is a new beginning, where I start to share more of my thoughts, ideas and projects. I want to talk about software and technology, of course, but I also want to talk about running and sports, philosophy and spirituality, entrepreneurship and personal growth, writing and creativity, or just fucking anything…
I think there is no better moment than today for anyone to have their own corner of the internet. Creating it is very easy, and with little creativity you can make something cool, the way you want it to look, with your personal taste. More important than that, sharing. That’s my new goal.
Sometimes I think about how many websites, blogs and articles I read throughout these years from random people, and how they helped me. Even though today you can ask AI anything, a message written by someone else has a different feel, from my perspective. So if one person reads it, it’s all worth it.
